#1 FOODIE PRO

Foodie Pro is, by and large, the most popular WordPress theme for food blogs based on my search. Its designer, Feast Design Co., claims that it's the #1 Genesis child theme, which makes sense to me. It's got a minimal design, lacking the huge image slider that many blog designs have.

Foodie Pro also has a recipe index where users can sort by category, date, and keywords.

Main points about Foodie Pro theme

  • The Foodie Pro theme requires that you purchase the Genesis Framework to get it working on your blog.
  • This theme does NOT come with a built-in recipe card plugin. You must install WP Recipe Maker (which is what the Foodie Pro designers recommend) or get another plugin.
  • 12 months of support and updates are included with the theme purchase.
  • Feast Design Co. highly recommends that you purchase their Feast Plugin instead of the Foodie Pro theme alone—because purchasing the Feast Plugin gives you access to ALL FIVE of their themes plus extra features! It's the better deal.

#2 BRUNCH PRO

Brunch Pro is the little sister of the wildly popular Foodie Pro. Both are Genesis child themes, which means you MUST purchase the Genesis Framework separately, or else the theme won't work on your blog.

Real-Life Example of Brunch Pro: All Day I Dream About Food

Feast Design Co. recommends installing the WP Recipe Maker plugin to use in conjunction with Brunch Pro so you can create beautiful recipe cards, complete with reviews, prep time, cook time, ingredient list, and nutrition facts.

See WP Recipe Maker in action in her Keto White Chicken Chili post. I've blurred out the ingredients below because I want you to visit her site to see the full recipe!

Brunch Pro Theme Summary

  • If you purchase this theme, you MUST purchase the Genesis Framework separately to get it to work properly on your site.
  • Brunch Pro comes with 12 months of support from its makers, Feast Design Co.
  • You can import demo content and widgets (to get it to look exactly like the demo site).
  • Feast Design Co. highly recommends that you purchase their Feast Plugin instead of the Foodie Pro theme alone—because purchasing the Feast Plugin gives you access to ALL FIVE of their themes plus extra features! It's the better deal.

#3 CRAVINGS PRO

Yet another beautiful, popular food blog theme built by Feast Design Co.

Like Feast Design Co.'s other themes, Cravings Pro comes with a helpful recipe index that lets users filter by dropdown menus:

Real-Life Example of Cravings Pro: Salt & Lavender

Summary of Cravings Pro

  • If you purchase this theme, you MUST purchase the Genesis Framework separately to get it to work properly on your site.
  • Cravings Pro comes with 12 months of support from its makers, Feast Design Co.
  • You can import demo content and widgets (to get it to look exactly like the demo site).
  • It doesn't come with a built-in recipe card, so you need to install a plugin if you want that. Feast Design Co. recommends WP Recipe Maker.
  • Feast Design Co. highly recommends that you purchase their Feast Plugin instead of the Foodie Pro theme alone—because purchasing the Feast Plugin gives you access to ALL FIVE of their themes plus extra features! It's the better deal.

#4 KALE PRO

This stunning theme is made with food bloggers in mind. It comes with a large full-width slider to display your latest creations, and it has BUILT-IN recipe cards so you can showcase your recipes without buying an external plugin.

Below is an example of how Kale Pro's built-in recipe card looks. Beautiful, right?

Real-Life Example of Kale Pro: Keto In Pearls

As you can see, Keto In Pearls made some customizations to the Kale Pro theme, including adding the scripty, cursive fonts. Also, instead of using the built-in recipe cards, she's using the Create plugin. See an example of it in action in her No Bake Sugar Free Peanut Butter Balls post:

Main points about Kale Pro theme

  • It comes with its own built-in recipe cards, so you don't need to buy a plugin.
  • Kale Pro has one-click demo import so you can model your site after the demo one.
  • Kale Pro comes with a Recipe Index feature, making it easy for your readers to quickly sort through your recipes and find the ones they like.
  • If you want ongoing support and theme updates, you have to pay $7.99/month (but the first month is free).

#5 UPTOWN

Okay, so Uptown isn't technically created for food blogs, but hear me out! It can be customized for any type of blog, and if you take a look at the real-life example from Alexandra's Kitchen below, you'll see that it looks stunning as a food blog!

Real-Life Example of UpTown: Alexandra's Kitchen

Now, if you're wondering how to get those beautiful recipe cards while using Uptown, Alexandra's Kitchen uses the Tasty Recipes plugin! Check it out in action below in her Orange-Ricotta Pound Cake post:

Uptown Theme Summary

  • Uptown is built on the Genesis Framework, but unlike other themes like this, it COMES with the Genesis Framework, so you don't have to purchase it separately (this saves you $59.95!).
  • Though this is a WordPress blog theme that's not made specifically for food blogs, it can be customized.
  • If you want recipe cards, you'll need to install a plugin, such as Tasty Recipes.
  • This theme comes with lifetime support from its designer!
  • Comes with demo content

#6 SPROUT & SPOON

Sprout & Spoon is built by my FAVORITE design studio, Solo Pine. I have purchased a couple of themes from them in the past and LOVED both the theme designs and the studio's support.

Sprout & Spoon is made specifically for food blogs, so it comes with a custom recipe card plugin and recipe index to help your readers find what they're looking for more easily. One thing I noticed is that, while the recipe index does categorize recipes by type, it lacks the dropdown filters and search capabilities that other food blog themes have.

Real-Life Example of Sprout & Spoon: Oh My Veggies

You can see Solo Pine's custom recipe plugin in action on Oh My Veggie's Coconut-Lime Tofu Soup post:

Sprout & Spoon Summary

  • Sprout & Spoon is made for food bloggers by my FAVORITE design studio, Solo Pine.
  • This theme comes with a custom recipe plugin, so you don't need to install an external one.
  • It also has a recipe index, though it's not as robust as others; it lacks filters and search capabilities.
  • You receive six months of support from Solo Pine when you purchase this theme, with the option to extend for a fee.

#7 ALDER

Here's another lifestyle blog theme being used wonderfully as a food blog theme! It's also by Solo Pine. Alder has a clean, minimal design and ecommerce capabilities should you decide to sell products through your blog. I can also personally attest to Solo Pine's solid support team!

Alder does NOT come with a built-in recipe plugin, so you'll either need to write out your recipes within the post or install an external recipe plugin.

Real-Life Example of Alder: The Vanilla Bean Blog

Main Points About the Alder Theme

  • It's not technically a food blog theme, but it can be used as one.
  • It does not come with a built-in recipe plugin, so you'll need to install one.
  • It does have ecommerce capabilities, so you can sell things through your website.
  • You receive six months of support from Solo Pine when you purchase this theme, with the option to extend for a fee.

#8 CLEAN FOOD THEME

Clean Food Theme has a minimalist design with lots of white space to help those yummy food photos stand out.

Clean Food Theme also comes with a recipe index that allows readers to search by season and ingredient! I didn't find that in a lot of the other food blog themes. You can actually create the category yourself, so it doesn't have to be “season,” it could say “diet” and so forth.

Real-Life Example of Clean Food Theme: In Jennie's Kitchen

Summary of Clean Food Theme

  • Purchase of this theme includes one year of support and updates.
  • Comes with a robust recipe index that allows you to create categories and index by ingredients.

#9 NEPTUNE

If your blog is strictly a recipe blog, Neptune might be the perfect WordPress theme for you. It has the most complex recipe features I've seen in any theme.

What kind of recipe features does it have? Country flags to signify where the cuisine hails from, nutritional info, interactive ingredients list, bookmarking/favoriting capabilities, just to name a few.

Summary of Neptune Theme

  • Try-before-you-buy demo access
  • Searchable recipe ingredients
  • User registration
  • Users can submit their own recipes
  • Robust recipe features, such as a built-in timer
  • Six months of support

#10 FOOD&COOK

Food&Cook is a bold, showy theme with prominent, full-width images and even animations. With WooCommerce integrations, it allows you to sell products on your food blog. It also has plenty of recipe features, including recipe cards, reviews, and a recipe index that groups foods by category.

Summary of Food&Cook Theme

  • WooCommerce integrated
  • Demo import
  • Recipe cards
  • Six months of support

#11 LAHANNA

Oh my goodness, if I were a food blogger, Lahanna is the WordPress theme I would buy! It's simply gorgeous, rich, and colorful, with all the features a food blogger would need.

What I love about this flexible food blogger theme is that it comes with three different demos that you can import, meaning you have essentially three different designs in one theme!

It even has ecommerce features (such as a shopping cart), so you can sell products on your food blog! Check it out:

Lastly, its recipe features are the best I've seen. Instead of having a recipe card at the bottom of the post, the entire post is a recipe! The nutritional information shows up in the sidebar at the top of the post.

Your readers can even CHECK OFF the ingredients list so they know what they need to buy! Love it.

Lastly, your readers can click timer links and get a live timer right on their screen!

Summary of Lahanna Theme

  • Awesome built-in recipe features, such as nutritional info, timers, ingredient list, yield, prep time, cook time, etc.
  • One-click demo import
  • WooCommerce support (you can sell on your blog)
  • Six months of support included with purchase

How to Get Recipe Cards If Your WordPress Theme Doesn't Come With Them

When searching for a WordPress theme for a food blog, it's likely that having recipe cards is important to you. Now, of course, you could always simply list out ingredients and instructions within the blog post. But recipe cards do make things easier.

So what do you do if your theme doesn't come with recipe features? Install a plugin! Here are a few popular options:

Option #1: WP Recipe Maker Plugin

Want to see how the WP Recipe Maker looks in real-life? Here's an example from My Pure Plants' Vegan Frittata post:

  • Recipe ratings
  • Optimized for Google recipe search
  • Display nutritional data
  • Compatible with Pinterest Rich Pins
  • Option to print recipe
  • Ability to add video
  • Option to import your recipes from other plugins

Option #2: Create Plugin

See the Mediavine Create plugin in action in this Snickerdoodle Blondies post by My Baking Addiction:

  • Recipe ratings
  • Full Google Rich Snippet support
  • Display nutritional data
  • Option to print recipe
  • Ability to add video
  • Option to import your recipes from other plugins

Option #3 Tasty Recipes Plugin

This is the plugin that popular food blogger Pinch of Yum uses. Check it out in action on their Cashew Chicken post.

  • Recipe ratings
  • Optimized for Google
  • Display nutritional data
  • Option to print recipe
  • Ability to add video
  • Option to import your recipes from other plugins
  • Ability to scale recipes (cook for two, instead of one, for example)
  • 15-day money-back guarantee
